About This Item

IMG_1520

The coin was obtained by my Great-Great Grandfather while traveling in South America (working for the John Deere Company) in the late 1800s. My Grandmother had it in a drawer for at least 75 years and I have had it in a drawer for another 25 years. I thought it was time for the coin to get out and do some traveling.

Coin History:
Just who was Napoleon III? He was the nephew of the “original” Napoleon Bonaparte and was Emperor of France from 1852 to 1870. This is a coin from the early part of his reign. Paris mint records give the mintage as 258,803,787. The coin put into circulation by 1852. The coin was withdrawn by law of 31 October 1934 and demonetized by 1st of January 1935, which explains why it is usually found very worn.

Note: 9-5-2011 -- Thank you goes to JURIT for moving the travel bug to Germany. My ancestors came from Germany in the 1850’s. This is fantastic for this coin to return to Europe for traveling.

11/20/2012 - Now that the coin has been travelling for over a year now I just wanted to add a short note of thanks to all the geocachers that have moved the coin along. It seems like more and more coins are becoming lost or stolen nowadays so I think the secondary part of the mission should be "prevent coin theft". If this means keeping the coin longer for the "right" cache to make the “drop”, then you have my approval.

7-20-2014 - Thank you to everyone who has kept this coin moving along.

12-21-2020 - Over nine years and still travelling. And now in France. Thank you to those who have taken such good care of this TB.

This was a nice spot to start out a new Travel Bug. Interesting to see if
Napoleon III's coin, can make it back to France. I'll see what I can do to get it started on its long journey. Dragon Eye
