Keychain pendant from Bullfrog Marina on Lake Powell, Utah.
Lake Powell is the central feature of the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area (GCNRA). Encompassing over 1.2 million acres, GCNRA offers unparalleled opportunities for water-based & backcountry recreation. The recreation area stretches for hundreds of miles from Lees Ferry in Arizona to the Orange Cliffs of southern Utah, encompassing scenic vistas, geologic wonders, and a vast panorama of human history.
All the text above is absolutely true. It is an impressive place and the water gets a lot of use, if the number of monster boats being towed by monster trucks to/from the lake on Utah Hwy. 276 is any measure. And, this is just the traffic from the metro areas of Denver and Salt Lake City. Furthermore, the size and number of houseboats in the area must be seen to be believed. However, this writer cannot help but lament the loss of art, artifacts and history below the waters. Moreover the lake hasn’t reached its storage capacity for many years and it is almost certain that within the lifetime of most of the readers, the lake will silt-in so much that it will be ineffective for flood control. Having read many of Powell’s scientific and technical writings, I can’t help but believe he would have been horrified to have his name attached to such a project.
