Current Goal

Antarctic Explorer would like to travel the world randomly from cache to cache.  If you find him, please help him along his way. Photographs would be much appreciated - I'd love to see where Antarctic Explorer has been. And most importantly, please log all Antarctic Explorer's activities; out of a cache, into a cache and any visits so that those following his adventures know where he is.

About This Item

Antarctic Explorer

This coin commemorates Roald Amundsen's finding of the geographical South Pole on 14th December, 1911. The Southpole expedition was a competition between the British Robert Scott and the Norwegian Roald Amundsen.
Both tried to be the first recorded person to reach the geographical South Pole.

On 9th August 1910 Amundsen started his expedition with his ship "Fram". His original destination was to be the North Pole. However Amundsen found out  that two Americans (Cook and Peary) had made it to the North Pole before him. So when he stopped in Madeira (the last stop before reaching the Pole) he informed his crew about their new destination, the South Pole.
In January 1911 the expedition reached Antarctica where they built their base camp until Amundsen commenced his expedition to the geographic South Pole on 19th November 1911 together with a team of 4 men, 4 sledges and 50 dogs.
Amundsen finally reached his destination on 14th December 1911 and left the Norwegian flag at this place. He made the FTF ;-).

At almost the same time; but leaving 1 month later than Amundsen, the British Robert Scott also started an expedition to the South Pole. However, he was very disappointed to find that Amundsen had been there just 35 days before him!
Unfortunately Scott and his crew died on their expedition.
