Current Goal

To help ScouterDuck find and hide caches that are on, along, or under water, or on islands. Along the way, to be steadfast and stable, and always make it back to safe harbor.

About This Item

It's not just my geocaching handle and avatar, but I name all my boats for ducks, wild North American types specifically.  This includes the recreational kayaks I use on small quiet waterways, some of which contain geocaches. For almost 20 years, a red Perception Xplorist named Merganser plied the waters of New York, Ohio, Michigan, and beyond with me.  At the end of 2023, I donated Merganser to a Scout troop.  Now a slate-blue Hobie Passport named Scoter will fill that role.  Fair winds and following seas!

The coin itself will reside in my (ScouterDuck's) collection, but will be permenantly associated with my kayaks, either Merganser or Scoter. I will log the coin in and out from all caches found or hidden using these "Geo-Yaks." I will also offer the opportunity to discover to other cachers I meet along the trails and/or waterways.

Third of the day on Oneida Lake, and this one well guarded by the nettles. It's getting late, time to get back in Merganser and padddle home.

Second cache of the day on Oneida Lake. It was a Loooong paddle from Hatter to here. And mow I'm dealing with stinging nettles all over. Merganser steadfast as ever.

Retrieve It from a Cache 9/8/2006 ScouterDuck retrieved it from Mad as a Hatter New York   Visit Log

On this Friday afternoon, my paddling arms got quite the workout going after all three caches on islands in Oneida Lake. This was the first, made all the more fun by the rules that require wearing a silly hat on the way to and at the cache. This was Merganser's fifth find, and marks when I first began calling her "Geo-Yak" Merganser.

Retrieve It from a Cache 8/31/2006 ScouterDuck retrieved it from Salmon River Reservoir New York   Visit Log

Spent a beautiful evening paddling around the reservoir before and after this cache. There is a way to hike here, but I chose to let Merganser bring me across by water. I had a little piece of wilderness all to myself as the sun began setting on an awesome day.

Merganser claimed a few honors here. Her first find of 2006, this cache had not been visited since July 2005. She also proved her ability to glide through thick lily pad areas.
