Wombatwandering took it to Porte Cochère

A Porte Cochère (French "Coach Getaway"), is a covered porch-like structure at a main entrance to a building, through which a horse and carriage could pass to provide arriving and departing occupants protection from the elements. There is a lovely one at Marylebone Station. Today’s walk also took you past the original Lord’s Cricket Ground. I didn’t realise there was an original (and indeed a second before the one we know now) nor that it was named after Thomas Lord, a cricketer who bought the land. 🏏

Wombatwandering took it to Water Tower 2 - Ladywell

A day of caching was planned with my geopal and we settled on the Ladywell area of south east London. I’d never heard of it before but it was the birthplace of the Rolling Stones’ Bill Wyman so the name somehow feels appropriate. The area is named after a well possibly dedicated to the Virgin Mary. It has an excellent Victorian water tower which has now been converted to apartments.🚰

Our local reviewer in London is not well at the moment so somehow four events were able to be published for today. One after the other, bush bash, bosh. One of them was a breakfast at IKEA Croydon. I think everyone who lives in Croydon was also there. 🛋️

Ohhhh, it’s GIFF movie day. Some great films were shown. The Australian one at a Geocaching Care Home was my favourite. Also loved the Danish one, the German FTF one with the 40 metre log, and I can see everyone buying the log winding device in that film. Well done everyone involved even if your film wasn’t chosen to be shown. 🎥

Wombatwandering took it to Edwards Invisible Cross

Still looking for a day when I can spend it all geocaching. Instead, I grabbed the chance to find this cache about the crosses for Queen Eleanor (1241-1290), the wife of King Edward I. Queen Eleanor died in Harby, Nottinghamshire, and Edward ordered a cross to be built at every place the Queen’s body rested on the cortege's journey back to London. The largest and most ornate of these medieval Eleanor crosses was the Charing Cross. Since the early 19th century, Charing Cross has been the notional "centre of London" and is now the point from which distances from London are measured. ✝️

South of the Thames for you today with a visit to Wandsworth. Nothing too exciting to report about Wandsworth except that it has one of London’s busiest interchanges. 🛻

Today’s outing was a birthday party event at a ruined church near the Tower of London. St Dunstan’s Church was built in 1100 and added onto as the years went by. It was badly damaged in the Great Fire of London and then rebuilt and a steeple added by Christopher Wren. Then it was bombed during the Second World War and the ruins eventually turned into a beautiful garden. I think it’s a great re-use of the area and especially poignant to be here on Remembrance Sunday. Still amazing that the steeple survived the Blitz.

A bit of sightseeing in London for you today. Stopped by 221B Baker Street, the home of Sherlock Holmes. It’s now the Sherlock Holmes Museum and is actually situated between 237 and 241 Baker Street. Baker Street did not go that far when Arthur Conan Doyle wrote the books. Then we stopped by the home of Danger Mouse, a secret agent mouse who works under a pillar box red post box around the corner from Sherlock Holmes. 🕵️♂️
