Current Goal

New Hampshire, USA has 48 mountains over 4,000' (1,200 m) high. Since 1957, the Appalachian Mountain Club has awarded nearly 10,000 hikers admission to the AMC Four Thousand Footer Club for climbing all 48 peaks in a lifetime.

About This Item

Hiking Boot TB

Wildcat A (4,422' or 1,348 m) is the highest of the five peaks on the Wildcat Mountain ridge on the east side of Pinkham Notch. Summits "A" and "D" are considered four thousand footers. Hikers must descend at least 200 feet before climbing any nearby higher summit, or the lower summit is not considered a four thousand footer.  The Wildcat Range is generally known to non-hikers as the Wildcat Mountain Ski Area. The original ski trails were built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1933.

The most common dayhiking route requires two cars. Hikers begin on the Wildcat Ridge Trail (part of the Appalachian Trail) leaving from Pinkham Notch. The Ellis River must be crossed at the very beginning of the hike, or you must make an alternate crossing on the Lost Pond Trail which adds nearly a mile to the hike. The Wildcat Ridge Trail climbs steeply up from Pinkham Notch, then traverses the entire Wildcat Ridge before dropping even more steeply into Carter Notch. The usual hike out of Carter Notch is on the relatively easy Nineteen Mile Brook Trail. The entire hike is 8.7 miles with 3,150' of elevation gain. And it is much harder than these statistics indicate.
