Stones of this kind are often flint stones with chalk deposits. The "real" Chicken God has a hole of about needle size to a few cm in diameter, sometimes remnants of a once embedded fossil crinoid (see paramoudra the theory about the origin of the holes). In Germany "Hühnergötter" (Chicken Gods) can be found on the Baltic and North Sea coast (for example, on the beaches of the North Frisian Islands) and glacial boulders inland. Amongst travelers they are a symbol for good luck and a popular souvenir. Elsewhere in Germany such formations can rarely be found or are unknown as a concept.
Steine dieser Art sind oft Feuersteinknollen mit herausgewitterten Kreideeinlagerungen. Der „echte“ Hühnergott hat ein Loch von etwa Stecknadelgröße bis einige cm Durchmesser, manchmal Überbleibsel eines einst eingelagerten fossilen Seelilienstängels (siehe Paramoudra zur Theorie über das Entstehen der Löcher). In Deutschland kommen Hühnergötter an der Ost- sowie Nordseeküste (beispielsweise an den Stränden der Nordfriesischen Inseln) und in eiszeitlichen Geröllen des Binnenlandes vor und sind unter Urlaubern als Glücksbringer ein beliebtes Souvenir. Andernorts in Deutschland sind solche Bildungen eher selten zu finden oder als Begriff unbekannt.
