Highway 20 runs 212 miles East-West from Emigrant Gap to Fort Bragg. It also passes through Nevada City, Grass Valley, Marysville, Yuba City, Colusa, Williams, Upper Lake, Ukiah and Willits. Various parts of Highway 20 were once heavily-used pioneer wagon roads and toll roads. In the earliest years of the motor vehicle, from 1910-1919, the state adopted the roads as Highway 20. Various sections of early-years Highway 20 were re-routed, including a signifcant portion around the north end of Clear Lake. (It previous went around the south end.) In 1934, the highway got its State Route 20 sign designation.
