Koblenz gehört zu den ältesten Städten Deutschlands; im Jahr 1992 feierte es sein 2000-jähriges Bestehen. Der ursprüngliche lateinische Name Confluentes (dt.: die Zusammenfließenden) leitete sich von der Lage der Stadt an der Mündung der Mosel in den Rhein am so genannten Deutschen Eck ab.

Koblenz (German: Koblenz), also spelled Coblenz (English and pre-1926 German spelling) or Coblence (French: Coblence), is a German city situated on both banks of the Rhine at its confluence with the Moselle, where the Deutsches Eck (German Corner) and its monument (Emperor William I on horseback) are situated.

As Koblenz was one of the military posts established by Drusus about 8 BCE, the town celebrated its 2000th anniversary in 1992.

The name Koblenz originates from Latin (ad) confluentes, confluence or "(at the) merging of rivers". Subsequently it was Covelenz and Cobelenz. In the local dialect the name is Kowelenz.

After Mainz and Ludwigshafen am Rhein, it is the third largest city in Rhineland-Palatinate, with a population of c. 106,000 (2006). Koblenz lies in the Rhineland, 92 kilometers (57 mi) southeast of Cologne by rail.

Coblence (en allemand : Koblenz, en latin : Confluentes) est une ville et un arrondissement d'Allemagne, située au nord du Land de la Rhénanie-Palatinat. Au 31 décembre 2008, la ville comptait 106 293 habitants.

Les villes les plus proches sont Bonn, à près de 60 km en aval du Rhin et Mayence, à 90 km en amont du Rhin. Coblence est la troisième ville de la Rhénanie-Palatinat et le siège de la conurbation Mayen-Coblence. C'est également une ville universitaire.

Le nom Coblence vient du latin Confluentes qui signifie confluent. Depuis 2002, une partie de Coblence a été inscrite au Patrimoine mondial de l'UNESCO.

Coblence se trouve dans une région appelée Deutsches Eck, littéralement le coin allemand, au confluent de la Moselle et du Rhin. La ville est bordée par une partie du Hunsrück au Sud et par le paysage légèrement vallonné du Maifeld (partie du massif de l'Eifel) à l'Ouest.
