The national emblem of the United States of America is the American bald eagle. Used on our Great Seal with outstretched wings and legs, the eagle is symbolic of freedom, authority and power.
A description of the Great Seal of the United States of America, which included the American bald eagle in its design, was accepted by the U.S. Congress in 1782 as a symbol of supreme power and authority. After a number of states used the seal in their state coats of arms, the Great Seal was accepted as our national emblem in 1787.
