The Fort Sumter Geocoin is in recognition for all who have served in the military during war time. It is part of a series of coins commemorating battles of the Civil War. We circulate it in memory of all who paid the ultimate price for freedom.
Decades of growing strife between North and South erupted in civil war on April 12, 1861, when Confederate artillery opened fire on this Federal Fort in Charleston Harbor... Fort Sumter surrendered 34 hours later... Union forces would try for nearly four years to take it back...
To commemorate Ft. Sumter that is now a National Monument, the first coin was minted...
If you ever have the chance to take the boat ride out to the Fort and see this monument, do so... It is well worth the money and the time...
