Picked this great coin up from a cache just off the River Trent. For History's sake, just a mile east was the site where King John and Oliver Cromwell were at battle over the famous Newark Castle. Cavaliers and Roundheads and muskets galore, I am so pleased it was a peaceful day by the river when I visited.

I will do my best to find another suitable place for the coin and add a bit of history if possible to the log. Happy travels.

Although not a civil war site, Hartlepool featured heavily in World War One, with the towns of Hartlepool and West Hartlepool (Now the Headland and Hartlepool) being bombed by three german warships a few months after the outbreak of the war. It was attacked shortly after Germany had lost a battle with the British Navy, and were looking for a moral boost. Hartlepool was a good target due to the port and shipyards which were important to the war effort, and in a forty minute bombardment, more than one hundred people were killed.
