Jalmari - the Saimaa Ringed Seal wants to travel around fine places in the nature.
Saimaannorppa (Pusa hispida saimensis, vanh. Phoca hispida saimensis) on norpan alalaji, joka on sopeutunut elämään Saimaan järvialtaassa. Se on relikti, joka jäi saarroksiin Saimaaseen viimeisen jääkauden jälkeisen maankohoamisen seurauksena noin 8 000 vuotta sitten. Saimaannorppa on maailman uhanalaisin hylje ja Suomen ainoa kotoperäinen eli endeeminen nisäkäs.
Nykyisin saimaannorppia arvioidaan olevan noin 310 yksilöä (2012).[5] Tutkimuksin todennettuna pienin kanta oli noin 180 yksilöä vuonna 1990. Kannan kehittymistä seurataan tarkasti, ja alalajin sukupuutto on tällä hetkellä ”erittäin todennäköistä”,[6] sillä lisääntymiskykyisiä naaraita on vain noin 70.
The Saimaa ringed seal (Pusa hispida saimensis) is a subspecies of ringed seal (Pusa hispida). They are among the most endangered seals in the world, having a total population of only about 310 individuals.[2] The only existing population of these seals is found in Lake Saimaa, Finland (hence the name). The population is descended from ringed seals that were separated from the rest when the land rose after the last ice age. This seal, along with the Ladoga Seal and the Baikal Seal, is one of the few living freshwater seals.
