About This Item

Bucklesbabe is the descendant of a number of Irish and English immigrants to Australia dating back to the First Fleet in 1788. One of those ancestors was Alfred Walker who was probably born at Bethnal Green in London in about 1842. Nothing is known about his early life, but in 1866 he migrated from London, England with several other Walkers of uncertain relationship on board the ship Star of England for Brisbane, Queensland.

From there he made his way south and in 1873 married Mary Susannah Paull in the town of Warren, New South Wales. As the family grew they moved around the district, living in Mendooran, Orange, Windoran and Moylan. Then, in about 1885 with Mary's parents and married sisters they moved north to the outback town of Blackall in Queensland. From there, they soon moved to Coreena Station outside Barcaldine before moving on again first to Clermont then back to Aramac before their final move to Richmond, Queensland where Alfred died in 1914.
