Manannan or Manannan Mac y Leirr, Son of the Sea, is a Manx/Celtic god from a time and religion that precedes Christianity and even the written word. He comes from a time when man's relationship with the Earth was vital for daily survival, and where mutual respect for the elements was of great importance.
Legend has it that Manannan was the first ruler of the Island and some say this is what inspired the name Isle of Man. The Isle of Man was the throne of Manannan, his stronghold was on the top of Barrule, and he held his court from Manannan's Chair at Cronk y Voddy.
Folk tales speak of him having a great stone fort on Peel Island where “he could make one man, standing on its battlements, seem to be a hundred. When he saw his enemies' ships sailing, he would cover the island round with a silver mist so that it could not be seen; and if, in spite of the mist, his enemies came near, he would throw chips into the water and change them into ships.”
Still to this day when it is misty on the Island it is referred to as Manannan’s cloak.
