About This Item

Black Caesar

The black pirate most written about is Black Caesar. Legend identifies him as a prominent African tribal war chieftain, who was Widely known for his "huge size, immense strength, and keen intelligence".

He avoided capture from many different slave traders, untill he was finually captured by a vile trick. During his captivity, Caesar refused to eat or drink. One sailor showed him kindness, and the two eventually befriended. He was the only man Caesar would accept food and water from.

As the slave-ship neared the coast of Florida, a hurricane suddenly apperared and threatened to wreck the ship on the Florida Reefs. Realizing the ship was doomed, the sailor quikly snuck below decks and freed Caesar. The two forced the capatin and crew into a corner (probobly at gunpoint) and boarded one of the ships Longboats which was loaded with supplies and ammunition. The wind and waves pushed the duo to shore, here they waited out the storm. They where likely the only two survivors of the doomed Slave vessel...

Caesar and his friend decided to attack passing ships. Whenever one was spotted, they rowed the long boat near the vessel and pretended to be shipwrecked sailors. Once aboard their victim, they seized control and took their treasure ashore. Eventually, they buried a large cache of booty somewhere on Elliott Key, or so legend says.

One day Caesar’s friend brought a beautiful woman to their island. The two men argued, and Caesar slew his friend in a duel and took the woman for himself. Alone, he continued his piratical raids until he acquired a number of ships and men. They attacked passing ships, then escaped into the coves and inlets where their prey could not pursue them.

Sometime in the early 1700s, Caesar joined forces with Blackbeard. In November 1718 at the famous battle of Ocracoke (near Ocracoke Island), Lieutenant Robert Maynard of the Royal Navy and his men attacked Blackbeard. Blackbeard found his death and Black Caesar was captured.

Caesar was taken prisoner by Virginian colonial authorities along with the rest of what remained of Blackbeard's crew after the battle. He was taken to Virginia and danced the hempen jig in Williamsburg.
