Magellan NAV 1000. Made in 1988 this was the first commercial handheld GPS.
It took 6 'AA' batteries and would run for about 7 hours. It has a 4-line, 16-character screen. With the batteries installed it weighs just under two pounds.
The NAV 1000 took 2.5 minutes to get the first satellite fix and updated every 3 seconds. You could store only 100 waypoints.
The owners manual (72 pages) recommends setting the unit in a window and using the a/c adapter for the first-time reading of the satellite almanacs, which could take up to 24 hours.
Original retail price was over a thousand dollars. This one still works.
In 2010, TIME Magazine listed the NAV 1000 as one of the 'All Time 100 Gadgets' (100 greatest and influential gadgets from 1923 to the present)
