Current Goal

My aim is to visit the closed and abandoned railways (tracks, tunnels, bridges, stations, viaducts -- anything!) of Britain, learning about them along the way.

About This Item

Mallard TB

Mallard TB is a model of the famous 'A4' class steam locomotive designed by Sir Nigel Gresley for the LNER (London & North Eastern Railway). It set the world speed record for steam locomotives at 126 mph in 1938, and continued in service until 1963. It was returned to steam in 1988 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of its record.

The 'real' Mallard is now in the National Railway Museum at York.

We had hoped to place this TB in a cache right next to the Lakeside station of the windermere steam train. We know that this is not a disused line but it now used for nostalgia tourist rides only on the old steam trains!! Unfortunately the intended cache turned out to be a puzzle cache, and we couldn't solve it at the time. (That will teach us to do our homework!!) We have uploaded some pictures of the trains which we hope you will enjoy, and hopefully the distance will make up for the length of time we have held onto it!! All the best 😁

Further information about the railway can be found here:
