Retrieve It from a Cache 9/7/2023 Nilpferd retrieved it from Der Schinder Bayern, Germany   Visit Log

Today we were at a cache which Nilpferd had already found in August 2006.
At that time I was still traveling in the US.
The cache was located at the top of Mt. Schinder.
"Schinder" means something like "struggle" or "drudgery" and I expected a very exhausting hike.
And then I realized that there were 2 of these Schinder mountains: A Bavarian Schinder and an Austrian Schinder and Nilpferd wanted to climb both. A double struggle so to speak.
And my expectation was right. It was uphill a steep slope of scree. Very demanding!
And at the end of the scree we had to go through a hole in a rock face. But there were some steel ropes to hold on and it was comparatively easy.

  • Steep slope of scree where we had to climb up
  • Now we have to go into this hole
  • Steel rope in the hole
  • Mt. Bavarian Schinder
  • Mt. Austrian Schinder
  • Finally a break after the drudgery

Retrieve It from a Cache 8/22/2023 Nilpferd retrieved it from Hasenpoint Bankerl Bayern, Germany   Visit Log

On Mt. Hasenpoint, a totally unknown peak next to the very popular Mt. Hochgern we were already 5 years ago. At that time we reached the summit from the north, but the way from the south also looked interesting. And today we tried this one.
For the first 10km we used the mountain bike on a forest road and when it became too steep we had another 500 meters of altitude on foot. Since on the hiking maps marked paths no longer existed or were lush overgrown it was an adventure.
Despite starting right at sunrise, it was quite warm at the summit.
But from there it was not far to a hut where we found beer bottles lying in the cool water of a well for self-service. And we also had a plum cake.
A wonderful day!

  • Mushroom in the middle of the forest road
  • Alpine refrigerator at a hut.

Retrieve It from a Cache 8/21/2023 Nilpferd retrieved it from Bogn Nosn (1358 m) Bayern, Germany   Visit Log

We have not done such a demanding hike for a long time.
The mountain is only 1358 meters above sea level, but it is not easy to climb it.
Its name is Mt. Bogn Nosn. This is Bavarian dialect and means bent nose.
It is a rock needle and when you see it from below you don't believe that you can climb it at all.
First it goes over very steep meadow slopes and at the end you have to climb a bit in the rocks.
At the top it is very narrow and there is only space for one person.
When taking pictures up there we had to be very careful that nobody falls down.

  • Mt. Bogn Nosn
  • Coming closer
  • The last steps to the summit
  • We have reached the top!

For almost 5 months we were no longer in Tyrol/Austria. Therefore, it was high time to check whether all the mountains are still standing. At least Mt. Kirchenspitz at Lake Achensee is definitely still there. We were there 9 years ago, but at that time there was no cache at the summit.
Mt. Ebner Joch right next is very popular with tourists, but on the slightly lower Mt. Kirchenspitz it is rather quiet. When we arrived at the summit there were only 2 girls. When they had made their selfies, they descended back into the valley and we were all alone at the summit and could admire the view to Lake Achensee.

  • Chapel on the way to Mt. Kirchenspitz
  • Nobody else at the summit
  • High above Lake Achensee
  • View to the Karwendel Mountains

After a long time we were finally back in the mountains. First we had temperatures of more than 30°C for weeks and then it rained for weeks. But today the conditions were good for a hike.
During the last years we were looking for the centuries old border stones which still exist in the Bavarian mountains. We have already found about 20 of these border stones and today we we looking for the last one.
We found it, but it was not spectacular. Only the letters "KW" (Königlicher Wald) which means „forest of the king“ and a number were engraved into a rock face.
But it was a nice hike and on the way back we had a delicious cherry crumble cake in a hut. And of course a beer.

  • Mt. Achselköpfe
  • A sunny place for a break
  • The old border marker
  • Mt. Hinterer Kirchstein
  • Probstalmhütte - a hut of the Alpine Club
