Over the weekend, I took you to the St Kilda Festival. You got to meet David “The Golden God” Genat, the new host of Australian Survivor (since the network axed Jonathon La Paglia for no reason). Then we listened to Mental As Anything, an Australian new wave and pop rock band popular in the 80s. St Kilda Festival is an annual two-day community event and takes place along the St Kilda foreshore. 🎷

I needed a multi today so I took you to the bayside suburb of Williamstown. The cities of Melbourne and Geelong are both situated on Port Phillip Bay and Williamstown served as Port Phillip's first anchorage site and continued as the centre for port facilities until the late 19th century. In the 1830s, the then township of Williamstown was initially considered along with the sites that became known as Geelong and Melbourne for the capital of the new colony at Port Phillip. Although Williamstown offered excellent proximity to anchorage, Melbourne was ultimately chosen due to its abundance of fresh water from the Yarra River.🚰

You were at the seaside for an event for a group of geocachers aboard Holland America‘s Noordam cruise ship. It’s docked in Port Melbourne for the day. Nearby Princes Pier was a major arrival point for new migrants to Australia, particularly during the post-war period, my own family amongst them. For many years, Port Melbourne was a focus of Melbourne's criminal underworld which operated smuggling syndicates on the docks. 🚢

I need furniture for my new house so I headed to the big box stores in Nunawading. Whitehorse Road is the site of the largest retail strip for bulk goods in Melbourne. The City of Whitehorse has named this strip the MegaMile, in an attempt to provide brand recognition for retailers. Nunawading was also one of the suburbs where the soap opera Neighbours was filmed. 🛏️

Here’s a blast from the past - an event in my old stomping ground, The Clyde Hotel. It’s just near the University of Melbourne, my Alma Mater. It’s always great to be back at the university but the pub has changed a lot “since my day”. Founded in 1853, the University of Melbourne is Australia's second oldest university. Classes commenced in 1855 with three professors, all of whom, like the founding University Chancellor, Redmond Barry, were from Ireland. There were sixteen students; of this body of students only four graduated! 👩🏼🎓
