Current Goal

Please drop this item in rural OR Premium Member Only caches.  Do not place it in an urban cache or abandon it at a caching event.  Transport the bug in the original plastic bag for as long as the bag lasts; the bag keeps the trackable clean and prevents tangling with other items.  Otherwise, take the travel bug anywhere you wish.  No permission is needed to leave the U.S.

Photos in the travel bug logs are appreciated.  I will be re-post them here, where they can be seen by other cachers.

About This Item

2ndarmored

Replica Shoulder Patch. This travel bug is one of several made to recognize the US Army Divisions that fought in Sicily and mainland Italy in World War II.  In the Spring of 2014 the travel bug owner activated, dipped, then, in March and April, took the travel bugs to caches in Italy. Some of the bugs were released in Italy and some were brought back to the states to be put into circulation.

The 2nd Armored Division played an important role during World War II in the invasions of North Africa and Sicily and the liberation of France, Belgium, and the Netherlands and finally the invasion of Germany.  The dision has the nickname "Hell On Wheels."  The large "2" at the top of the insignia represents the numerical designation of the division, and the insignia is used as a basis for most other sub-unit insignias. The cannon represents fire power, the track represents mobility, and the lighting bolt represents speed and shock force.  The three colors, red, yellow, and blue represent the Artillery, Cavalry, and Infantry Branches respectively, which are the colors of the three original combat arms which, when forged into one, created the field of Armor.

Elements of the division were among the first U.S. military to engage in offensive ground combat operations in the European and Mediterranean theater during World War II. The 2nd served in North Africa along with her "sister" division, the 1st Armored.  The division landed in Sicily on 10 July 1943 in support of the 1st Infantry Division at the Battle of Gela.  Afterwards, the division next went into action in the second landing at Licata, Sicily on 21 July and fought through to Palermo.  After Sicily was taken the division went back to England for training and staging for the invasion of Normandy.

Retrieve It from a Cache 8/30/2014 sneakybitch retrieved it from Nolanville Hill Cache Series #5 Texas   Visit Log

Took it on a cache run through out the day today. Will drop it off at another cache here within the next week while we are traveling through the beautiful Texas Hill Country. Have to add this little side note...my hubby was just here in the kitchen with me and asked me where I got this HELL ON WHEELS from...so I told him. He proceeded to inform me that he was part of the HELL ON WHEELS while he was stationed here at FT. HOOD when he came back from Germany in the 90's. The patch used to be worn on the top left front side of the uniform. I think that is totally awesome! He started talking about his army days back then. It brought good memories for him. Thanks a bunch for setting this out. You have just made my night.
