Spread awareness about how retired racing greyhounds need proper training before being adopted out. For The Hounds in Anderson, SC does not tell the truth about their dogs.
I adopted "JB's Superbad" from For The Hounds (in Anderson, SC) and it was the worst decision of my life.
He never learned that the proper place for him to dump and pee was outside, even after I did everything the two books I bought about Greyhounds said to do. I would take him out about 5 times a day and he did not utilize this time to relieve himself. He waited until he came back inside to dump right in the middle of my living room and then pee.
I cannot leave him out of the cage while I am gone because he tears apart everything he can get his teeth on. The muzzle I was given by FTH and a new muzzle that I bought were both equally useless, as he could get them off no problem. I bought one crate that he could get out of every day because he worked on it with his teeth until there was blood all over the back of it and on my white carpet. I spent another $120 on a steel crate and reinforced it with close to 50 zipties and he bent in the bottom of it as well, also leaving blood on the floor.
I felt like I was lied to in regards to the condition of this dog's training and readiness to be placed in a home. I have read two books that I purchased on Greyhounds and did everything it says to do and this dog did not get the message. One day there was poo on my floor, on the couch, on the WALL, and on one of my shirts. I gave him ample time outside every day. He gave me no warning as to when this is going to happen. No barking, whining, scratching, or standing by the door.
I take great pride in the cleanliness of my home and I could not let that dog ruin it. I had to keep my trashcan out on my balcony because if I turned my head for a minute he would knock it over and drag everything out.
I treated him like a god during all of this with expensive food, feather down comforters to sleep on, and specially made collars imported from Canada. He walked the line of royalty. The head of FTH never even called me or emailed to thank me for getting the dog in the first place. She was very distant and painfully slow to respond to anything during the whole process.
I am not a jerk as this rant may seem but I am absolutely disgusted with almost every aspect of this part of my life. The total damage to my home this dog has caused is easily $600. I was given no reimbursement of any kind from FTH for what this dog did. His adoption fee has already been paid so if you are thinking of adopting this worthless animal you should get him for free. He is a pack dog and should never have been allowed to go to anyone's home without another dog with him.
