Current Goal

Debbie has always wanted to visit the great theatres and museums of the world. She would also love to have her picture taken at famous places or with famous people. (Not asking for much, is she?!?!?) Someday, after traveling around the world, she would like to meet up with her sister travel bugs - Cindy, Barbie and Goldilocks - in Bellingham, Washington.

About This Item

Little doll with reddish, blonde curly hair and a pink, ruffly dress. Please be careful with her. She can't stand to have her hair messy!

Debbie is unfortunately still missing, we had to place her (theoretically) in a cache so that we could then log her as missing!!

We are very sad to report that Debbie was stolen from our car. We fear she is lost forever.

We saved Debbie from getting her hair too messy after staying so close to the sea, the Southern most point of Africa to be precise.

Debbie returned from her outing with XV Pilot & Bev Bug full of newly-gained knowledge. Hope you like their pictures!

I must say that, with her carefully styled hair and lacy pink dress, Debbie doesn't look like a military history buff. But then looks can be deceiving, and often are, particularly on the battlefield. I hope she enjoyed accompanying Bev Bug and myself on our visits to two historical Cape gun emplacements.

  • Atop the Noon Gun Here we see Debbie sitting atop one of the two oldest SBML (Smooth Bore Muzzle Loading) guns in daily use in the world.

Designed in 1786 by Capt. Thomas Blomefield and cast by Walker & Co. in early 1794, these guns were proof fired at Woolwich in June of 1794 before being brought to the Cape during the 1795 occupation. It is likely that they were used by the Royal Navy at the Battle of Muizenberg on 7 August 1795. Now they fire to mark noon, firing at exactly 12:00 every day except Sunday.
  • Debbie and the Kloof Nek Battery Here is Debbie sitting on one of two 12-pounder guns which were placed in Kloof Nek in 1782 by the Dutch East India Company (VOC) to defend the settlement near the castle from attack by any force which should choose to land on Camps Bay Beach. The guns could control the wagon track which led from the beach to the castle via Kloof Nek.

Debbie enjoyed her visit to the monument, and seems to be developing a taste for military history. With this in mind, we thought she'd like to accompany XV Pilot and Beverley Bug as they went in search of two more caches of historical military significance.

Debbie accompanied the Team on a family holiday to the not-terribly-famous Anysberg nature reserve. On the way back we passed a monument to the somewhat-more-famous General A C Wauchope who commanded the S.A. Highlanders in the considerably-more-famous Anglo/Boer War of 1899-1902.

This war is famous amongst military strategists for being the first large-scale war in which modern commando tactics were used with some success against a numerically superior conventional force.

In spite of feeling rather cold in her pretty party dress, Debbie has been enjoying the sights of Cape Town. Today she paid a visit to the old Groote Schuur Hospital, famous for being the place where, on 3 December 1967, Dr Chris Barnard performed the world's first successful heart transplant on a 53-year-old patient named Lewis Washkansky.

  • Shireen & Debbie Debbie met up with Health Sciences student Shireen for a tour of the old hospital. Here they are in front of the main entrance with its ornate carved fanlight.
  • Shireen & Debbie again Here's another shot of student Shireen and TB Debbie, showing a bit more of the building.
