Current Goal

Charlie’s mission is to investigate sources of mercury pollution, such as coal fired power plants, waste incineration, and cement production, mines, (etc). Please help Charlie find out where all this mercury is coming from by taking him to geocaches near such places, and logging his findings on geocaching.com.

About This Item

Hi. I’m Charlie the Tuna. Recently tests conducted by the Food and Drug Administration have shown that tuna fish contains alarming levels of mercury. So much that they recommend that people, especially pregnant women, should limit their consumption of tuna fish. And the amount of mercury in tuna, swordfish, and several other species appears to be increasing. How could this be? I spend my entire life out in the middle of the ocean. I don’t come into shore for anything, yet all this mercury is getting into my system. I use to be chicken of the sea, but now I’m terrified of it.

I’m not so worried about pregnant humans, I’ve got my own problems to worry about. Hey, if eating more than one serving of tuna per week is enough to put a human child at risk of mercury poisoning, just think what being that tuna must be doing yourself and your children. Please help me out by investigating sources of mercury pollution and documenting my travels on-line.
