To make it to my new home at the USS Monitor Center at The Mariners’ Museum in Newport News, Virginia in time for the Grand Opening of the Center on the 145th anniversary of my most famous battle against the Monitor. Please get me to Virginia by March 9, 2007.
On March 9, 1862, I entered the waters of the James River for the Battle of Hampton Roads. My formidable opponent was the CSS Virginia, converted from the Union sailing warship the USS Merrimack. Some called me a “cheesebox on a raft,” but my design changed naval history forever and warships around the world are still using my revolving gun turret technology.
