Current Goal

Butcher's original mission (2004) was to make it to Alaska in time to see the Iditarod. Since the passing of legendary musher Susan Butcher in 2006, her goal has been to honor the sacrifices of the original Anchorage-to-Nome sled dogs and their courageous mushers, as well as those in the current Iditarod races.

About This Item

I did, I did, I did the Iditarod Trail

The Iditarod Sled Dog Race is run every year in March to commemorate a moment of true courage. In 1925, a diphtheria outbreak struck Nome. The nearest source of life-saving medicine was in Anchorage. However, airplanes were new and nobody knew if a plane could fly in such cold weather. The decision was made to ferry the medicine by train to Nenana, and from there, by dogsled up along the Iditarod Trail to Nome. In 1967, musher Joe Redington, Sr. and amateur historian Dorothy Page worked together to create the Iditarod Race. The first few races covered only part of the distance covered in 1925, and in 1973 the race was expanded to cover the full length. This travel bug is named in honor of Susan Butcher, a highly accomplished musher. Between 1986 and 1990, Butcher won 4 out of 5 times; She finished in the top five in 12 of her 17 races, and in the top ten 15 of the 17 times. "Alaska: Where men are men and women win the Iditarod."

Susan Butcher passed away on August 5, 2006, from leukemia. The State of Alaska acknowledges her contributions on Susan Butcher Day, which is held on the first Saturday of March.

Stopped by to drop off Butcher, the Iditarod Dog, so she can race this year! On the walk here, we spotted a baby moose and mother, then later on the trail, another baby moose and mother! Very exciting!! We originally located this cache in April 2022, so figured it would be a good spot for Butcher, as it is not far from a dog park.

I hope someone visits the TB Hotel before the snow gets deep, and takes her to the race.

As best as I can determine, I discovered Butcher in "The Reason Mrs. geocat Loves Sunflowers Traditional Cache" (GC5VT25), which is a large cache and terrific travel bug hotel in Springboro, OH. Thanks to cq7203 for the helpful hint, as I seemed to have not listed the grab. How Butcher came to be in this cache, I cannot say.
However, I already had plans to visit Anchorage in 2024, so Butcher stayed with me.
