Current Goal

Butcher's original mission (2004) was to make it to Alaska in time to see the Iditarod. Since the passing of legendary musher Susan Butcher in 2006, her goal has been to honor the sacrifices of the original Anchorage-to-Nome sled dogs and their courageous mushers, as well as those in the current Iditarod races.

About This Item

I did, I did, I did the Iditarod Trail

The Iditarod Sled Dog Race is run every year in March to commemorate a moment of true courage. In 1925, a diphtheria outbreak struck Nome. The nearest source of life-saving medicine was in Anchorage. However, airplanes were new and nobody knew if a plane could fly in such cold weather. The decision was made to ferry the medicine by train to Nenana, and from there, by dogsled up along the Iditarod Trail to Nome. In 1967, musher Joe Redington, Sr. and amateur historian Dorothy Page worked together to create the Iditarod Race. The first few races covered only part of the distance covered in 1925, and in 1973 the race was expanded to cover the full length. This travel bug is named in honor of Susan Butcher, a highly accomplished musher. Between 1986 and 1990, Butcher won 4 out of 5 times; She finished in the top five in 12 of her 17 races, and in the top ten 15 of the 17 times. "Alaska: Where men are men and women win the Iditarod."

Susan Butcher passed away on August 5, 2006, from leukemia. The State of Alaska acknowledges her contributions on Susan Butcher Day, which is held on the first Saturday of March.

Retrieved this little guy from a chilly cache (I'm sure he didn't mind the little cold - compared to what he is used to), will feed him, give him water, let him rest by the woodstove and then send him on his way! Thanks for sharing your TB.

I'd love to visit Alaska but I have no immediate plans to go there so I will move this TB on it's way very soon. I'll put it close to a highway that should help get it going in the right direction.
