About This Item

Replacement Hokie Bug

WHAT'S A HOKIE?

The answer leads all the way back to 1896 when Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College changed its name to Virginia Polytechnic Institute*. With the change came the necessity for writing a new cheer and a contest for such a purpose was held by the student body.

Senior O.M. Stull won first prize for his "Hokie" yell (see below) which is still used today. Later, when asked if "Hokie" had any special meaning, Stull explained the word was solely the product of his imagination and was used only as an attention-getter for his yell. It soon became a nickname for all Tech teams and for those people loyal to Tech athletics.

The official university school colors - Chicago Maroon and Burnt Orange - also were introduced in 1896. The colors were chosen by a committee because they made a 'unique combination' not worn elsewhere at the time.

The official definition of "hokie" is "a loyal Virginia Tech Fan".

* The official name of the university was changed from "Virginia Polytechnic Institute" to "Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University" in 1970 to reflect its ever-broadening mission.  VPI&SU, the largest university in the commonwealth of Virginia, is, however, nowadays colloquially known as "Virginia Tech".

Picked up at Vikings Treasure Cave in the Shenandoah National Park. Unfortunately, being a Yankee - didn't recognize the symbol and there was no information with TB on travel plans (we will include when placing in next cache). So we brought it back to Pennsylvania from our vacation and found out Hokie was trying to get BACK to Virginia. Sorry! We will have him visit Lehigh! Hopefully we can get him fast tracked back to Virginia.

Sorry for having this one in our possession for so long, but we are heading to Va next week, and will drop it off there. Hopefully that will help him get to where he's going quicker.

Actually, had to drop it in the cache first and then retrieve it so it could get credit for its miles.
