In the 7th district (Ullanlinna), close to the border of the 5th (Punavuori), lies St. John's Church or Johanneksenkirkko. The largest stone-built church in the country was built in Gothic Revival style, completed in 1891 and it can house a congregation of 2,600. (The church of Kerimäki, in Eastern Savo, claims to be the largest wooden church in the world. Old legend has it that the measurements on the drawings were feet but were interpreted as meters. ;) )

Geognome14 took it to Stairways To Eira

Back to the 6th district, Eira! Between this fine residential area and sea, right next to the cache, ran the harbour railway line that circled the centre. Opened in 1894, it started north of the main railway station, ran between Kamppi and Etu-Töölö districts (now a popular bike way) to the Western Harbour, then around Punavuori and Eira, branching to Hernesaari industries, and until 1980 further past Kaivopuisto and right across the Market Square to Katajanokka. The final, northwest section was closed and lifted in 2008. I was fortunate to catch a heritage train all the way to Eira still in 2005. :)

Geognome14 took it to Helsinki Geopoly – Rantatie
|
Finland
- 1.02 miles

|
This Geopoly street refers to Eteläranta ("south quay / shore / strand") , that never actually has had the name Rantatie ("quay / shore road") – but this is where it has to be, as the other light blue coloured streets Espalandi and Kauppatori are right next to it. :)
Located mostly in the 3rd district (Kaartinkaupunki) which forms the southern part of the city center, Eteläranta is the home to some of the fanciest, best and most expensive restaurants in the city. Opposite to these is Kauppahalli, the Market Hall, right on the embankment of Eteläsatama, the Southern Harbour. Here arrive the car ferries from Stockholm, Sweden – the largest in the world – as well as ferries to the Suomenlinna fortress islands. The Presidential Palace and City Hall line the harbour, with the Lutheran and Orthodox Cathedrals forming an impressive backdrop. This is Helsinki's iconic skyline.
Kaartinkaupunki is named after the Finnish Guard, whose barracks nowadays form the Ministry of Defense and Defense Forces General Staff in the heart of the district, which boasts many offices but not much housing anymore. Eteläranta itself is nowadays a synonym to the powerful business unions, the negotiating counterparts of the labour unions (based in Hakaniemi), as their offices are located in the Palace Hotel building at Eteläranta 10.
This mystery cache is actually on another quay further away, where winter still showed its might, despite the temperature rising some 10 degrees from the coldest days this week. :)

Geognome14 took it to Hello Sailor
|
Finland
- .13 miles
|
Visit Log
|
This southwest corner of Kamppi is known as Hietalahti, Sand Bay, after the nearby bay itself, nowadays more a harbour basin. The harbour railway was lifted and the harbour closed in 2008, except for the passenger/car ferries to Tallinn in Estonia and cruise ships in the summer. Some sailors' bars survive, though without the sailors, but keeping up the romantisized ideal and history.

Geognome14 took it to Rainbow Forest

Finland

This cache is under a major bridge on the border of the 4th (Kamppi) and 20th (Länsisatama, Western Harbour) districts. This is where the dense city used to end, to the west were only the docks and industry before Lauttasaari. In Länsisatama the Ruoholahti area was converted to housing in the 1990s, now the construction is advancing through Jätkäsaari, and Hernesaari will come later. The harbour railway line used to run here as well.

Geognome14 took it to Helsinki Geopoly – Mikonkatu
|
Finland
- .16 miles

|
Helsinki Geopoly continued to the central street of Mikonkatu, in Swedish (our 2nd official language) Mikaelsgatan. It was named in 1820 after grand duke Michael (Mikhail, 1798–1849), the brother of the Russian tsar Alexander I.
Mikonkatu is located in the 2nd district, Kluuvi, right in the commercial centre of Helsinki. It crosses the major shopping street Aleksanterinkatu and lines the eastern edge of Rautatientori, Railway Square, opposite to the main railway station. Very close by are also the National Theater and Ateneum, the main museum of the National Gallery.
Actually, the cache itself was again somewhere completely different, but better not give that away. ;)
