To see the world's oceans, seas, and rivers with the final goal of visiting the Great Barrier Reef. Please take pictures of me whenever I visit a watery spot.
The attached plastic totem is of various types of coral including the species Acropora. Coral are very special animals that grow in large colonies. Coral reefs make up only 1 percent of the ocean but support 25 percent of all ocean life!
Coral facts:
- Corals are actually animals, but most of their energy comes from sunlight. Within the body of the animal are small plant cells called zooxanthellae that form a symbiotic relationship with the coral. The zooxanthellae take the energy of the sun and in turn feed the coral energy.
- Some coral, including acropora, build skeletons as they grow using calcium found in ocean waters. These skeletons become weak and brittle when the pH of the water increases too much. The number one cause of increased pH levels is carbon produced by factories, cars, and other human-created sources.
- Corals thrive within a very specific range of tempratures and any fluctuations can kill them. Global warming is a major threat to the world's coral reefs.
- Efforts to grow and breed corals in captivity are proving successful. Many corals kept in home aquariums were grown in captivity. These same aquaculture efforts are being used to replant coral reefs that were previosuly damaged.
