Visiting Tucumcari on Old Route 66 and Tucumcari Mountain!!

  • Tucumcari Route 66 Sign The "Route 66 Monument," is a semi-whimsical tribute to the Mother Road. Artist Tom Coffin was commissioned by Tucumcari, the New Mexico Highway Department, and the New Mexico Arts Commission to create the sculpture, set on a sloping base that looks a bit like a Tex-Mex temple made of 1) sandstone tires, and 2) serpentine outlines of two-lane road. Dedicated in 1997, it's topped with a chrome, 1950s tail fin and lights, and a pair of tubular retro sixes -- all pointed west.
  • Tucumcari Mountain Tucumcari Mountain, once referred to as Tucumcari Peak or Mesa Tucumcari, is a mesa situated just outside Tucumcari, New Mexico. Where the mountain got its name is uncertain. It may have come from the Comanche word "tukamukaru", which means to lie in wait for someone or something to approach. A 1777 burial record mentions a Comanche woman and her child captured in a battle at Cuchuncari, which is believed to be an early version of the name Tucumcari.
