The very first decorated Christmas tree is said to have been set up in Riga's Town Hall Square in 1510. It's spring now, but still a snowy night when I visited the monument. You can see the statue of Roland in the background.

This is a memorial outside of the Corner House (Stūru māja), a KGB building in which many people were jailed and worse during the Soviet occupation. The building now houses a museum that's worth seeing, and has a striking new exterior.
