North. The polar seas where Barents was looking for an alternative passage to India.

Das ist die Kompassrosen-Münze von 2015 und Willem Barents gewidmet. Barents war ein niederländischer Seefahrer , Entdecker und Kartograph des 16. Jhdts und Namensgeber der Barentssee, einem Teil des nördlichen Eismeeres. Er unternahm drei Fahrten zur Entdeckung der Nordost-Passage, einem alternativen Seeweg zum fernen Osten, der als lang und gefährlich  galt. Als Kartograph zeichnete er als Erster den Nordpol als Meer von Kontinenten umgeben. Er starb auf seiner dritten Reise an Skorbut. Sein Schiff wurde vom Eis eingeschlossen und er musste überwintern. Erst 1871 wurde  sein Winterhaus entdeckt mit all seinen Aufzeichnungen und Karten.

Der Kompass enthält 16 Punkte, die für die 16 Mann Besatzung stehen, der Punkt in der Mitte für Barents selbst. Die Rose ist als Schneeflocke gestaltet, um die Kälte der Arktis zu verdeutlichen. Die Rückseite zeigt das Schiff, umgeben von Tieren der Arktis: Walross, Robbe, Eisfuchs und Eisbär.

This compass rose coin from 2015 is dedicated to Willem Barents. Barents was a dutch seafarer, discoverer and cartographer from the 16th century and namesake of the Barent sea, a part of the Northern polar sea. He went on three journeys to discover the North-East passage, an alternative route to the Far East. The usual route around Africa was considered to be long and dangerous. As a cartographer he was the first to draw the Northern Pole as a sea surrounded by continents. He died on his third journey of scurvy. His ship was enclosed by ice and he had to stay for the winter. Only in 1871 was his winter house discovered with all his documents and maps.

The compass contains 16 dots representing his crew of 16, the dot in the middle represents Barents himself. The rose resembles a snowflake to illustrate the cold of the arctic region. The back shows the ship , surrounded by animals of the arctic region: a walruss, a seal, a polar fox and a polar bear.
