All you have to do is pick up one of the travel tags, and take it somewhere, anywhere. Take it to the cache down the street, take it around the world. Just don't hang onto it very long, so you can give someone else a chance to help out.
This is a blue travel bug tag. Its goal is to travel as much distance as possible. I don't care where it goes, as long as it goes SOMEWHERE. Don't lose it, don't keep it too long, and have fun.
I don't know when the race will end. I guess when all of them inevitably go missing? Who knows!
