Many years ago, my mother gave me bookmark with a penny attached, this particular penny had a cutout shaped like two footprints, the bookmark had this story printed on the front.
A man dreamed he was walking along the beach with the Lord.
He noticed two sets of footprints in the sand; one belonging to him, and the other to the Lord.
At the last scene of his life he noticed that many times along the path of his life there was only one set of footprints during the very lowest and saddest times in his life.
He questioned the Lord about this.
The Lord replied, "My precious child, I love you and I would never leave you. During your times of trial and suffering, when you see only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you."
I remember hearing or reading this story during my teen years, it was often lettered on a poster or photo of beach. I remember the beaches to be moonlit, or at sunset or a picturesque sky. I've always liked the story. I carried that penny in my wallet for many years. As the wallet wore out, I eventually lost the penny through a hole in the leather. I like think that someone has picked it up, and I hope they recognize the connection to the story, and appreciated the message it conveys.
I recently purchased several tokens very similar to that penny, one for my daughter, one for my wife, one for me, and one to share as this trackable.
This is a picture of me, and my daughter walking along a beach, while we took this stroll, I was reminded of this story. She's just the happiest kid in the world right now, and I dream that she continues to have a trouble free life. I hope to be the kind of father that will be there for her and carry her through troubled times, no matter how great or small.
