Harold Hardrada
King of Norway from 25 October 1047 to 25 September 1066
Hardrada also claimed to have a claim to the throne of England as he descended from King Canute. He, his family, his gold and riches, horses and army arrived on 200 ships. They sailed up the Humber and then up the Ouse before leaving their boats at Riccall and walking the rest of the way to York. Just south of York at Fulford they met the Dukes of Northumberland, Edgar and Morcar and fought the Battle of Fulford. The battle took place on 20 September and the Norwegians lost. An exchange of prisoners was arranged for 25 September at Stamford Bridge but the exchange never took place as King Harold arrived from the South, took the Norwegians unawares with no armour on and limited weapons. Hardrada lost the Battle of Stamford Bridge and was shot in the eye with an arrow. His scribe took down the poetry of his dying words as Hardrada waxed lyrical on his deathbed. The Norwegians left on 20 ships.
