William the Conqueror
King of England from 25 December 1066 to 9 September 1087
Duke William of Normandy arrived near Pevensey on the south coast but by then Harold had moved his troops north. On 13 October Harold arrived at the hoary apple tree on Calbec Hill in Battle and the following day, on 14 October, the Battle of Hastings took place. William’s housecarls were on horseback but Harold used the shield wall and archers. The battle raged backwards and forwards and at one stage William’s men thought William had died and began to retreat and he was forced to lift his visor, a very risky move. Harold was killed with an arrow in the eye. William was crowned King of England at Westminster Abbey on Christmas Day 1066. During the coronation, cheering broke out inside the abbey and William’s men outside think that a riot has started and the start to set fire to the abbey. Everyone inside rushed out and William was left to crown himself. He was crowned king of England a second time two years later with Matilda his wife.
