The Heinz Company was founded by HJ Heinz near Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. The most famous Heinz product you might know of today is the ketchup, but the company's first product was a actually horseradish! The pickle, like the one on this travel bug, is a staple on Heinz labeling. The pickle originates from the company's Heinz pickle pin advertising campaign. Over the decades, 100 million pickle pins have been produced and is both one of the longest-running and most successful promotions in history. This pickle also reminds us of another local Pittsburgh tradition, the Christmas pickle, where a pickle is hidden in the Christmas tree and the child who finds it first has good luck all year or gets a prize.
