This Trackable is sent in Honor of Hal Pierce
“Captain Hal was everywhere,” said Retired Navy Cmdr. Pete Riehm. “He was our beloved Sea Lord.”
A large crowd of family members, veterans, politicians and admirers celebrated Pierce’s legacy during a memorial ceremony in the Aircraft Pavilion at the USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park in Mobile.
“Captain Hal, in his passing, is leaving a gigantic hole in the veterans community,” said Retired Army Col. Pat Downing. “He can never be replaced.”
Pierce, a native of Zion, Ill., came to Mobile in 1974, after being assigned to the region on a recruiting assignment. According to Downing, he “loved the Mobile Bay area so much that he decided to stay here the rest of his life.”
Pierce, who joined the Navy in the mid-1950s, became involved in a host of military, community and veterans causes and approached most of them with “fierce passion,” according to family and admirers.
That passion could “rub people the wrong way,” his daughter Jenny Piece fondly recalled. She said her father approached each cause with “fierce love” and a spirit of “enthusiastic generosity.”
