Out to Ealing in West London for a birthday event of sorts to the United Kingdom’s oldest Wherigo, “Where I Went, Hugo” (GC18FP7). It’s 6000 days old, or nearly 25 years. By 1902 Ealing had become known as the "Queen of the Suburbs" due to its greenery, and because it was halfway between city and country. Nowadays, it’s fully suburban and no more green than anywhere else in London. 🧁

I had not driven my car for some time so we headed to an event on a farm at Maple Cross, Hertfordshire, to the north west of London. Found some caches along the Grand Union Canal, the principal navigable waterway between London and the Midlands, then doubled back past this particular cache which is where the Jackson Studios were once located. Motörhead recorded one of the most iconic British rock songs, "Ace of Spades" there in 1980. Other artists who recorded at the studios include Dr. Feelgood, Eddie and the Hot Rods, Girlschool, UFO, Nick Lowe, The Pirates, Elton John and Ian Dury. 🎸

I needed a multi for my calendar today so. Took you just south of the Thames in London to Stockwell. On 22 July 2005, following the 21 July 2005 London bombings, Stockwell gained notoriety as the scene of the shooting by police of an innocent Brazilian electrician, Jean Charles de Menezes, on a tube train. 🪦

Welcome back to the United Kingdom! You attended an event in Teddington, far south west London. Teddington is at the point of the River Thames where tidal flow ceases owing to it containing the 'final lock'. Not many people realise the Thames is a tidal river through London. Tedding is or was home to Julian Clary (comedian, author, actor and LGBTQIA+ activist), Mo Farah (Olympian champion long-distance runner), Keira Knightly (actor), Benny Hill (comedian, actor, singer and writer), and Noël Coward (actor, playwright and songwriter). 🇬🇧

Et retour en France……And back to France…… You spent today wandering around Lille. Louis Pasteur was named dean of the new faculty of sciences at University of Lille in 1854 and began his studies on fermentation. A branch of the Pasteur Institute is in Lille and it was there in July 1921 that Albert Calmette and Camille Guérin discovered the first anti-tuberculosis vaccine, known as BCG ("Bacille de Calmette et Guérin"). Now it’s time to hop on the Eurostar and zoom under the English Channel. 🇫🇷

All of that just to get GC40, mainland Europe’s oldest geocache. It’s in a lovely forest in the Namur region. Now to turn around and retrace our route back to Lille. 🇧🇪

You’ve made it to the Au Front Mega in the Vimy region of Pas-de-Calais, France. The Battle of Vimy Ridge was part of the Battle of Arras during the First World War. The main combatants were the four divisions of the Canadian Corps in the First Army, against three divisions of the German 6th Army. The battle occurred from 9 to 12 April 1917. The battle was the first occasion when the four divisions of the Canadian Expeditionary Force fought together and it was made a symbol of Canadian national achievement and sacrifice. A 100 ha (250-acre) portion of the former battleground serves as a memorial park and site of the Canadian National Vimy Memorial.
It’s bad luck that the Mega has very wet weather. Lots of mud while looking for caches. Someone even found some unexploded ordnance very close to a cache so that one had to be disabled. 🪖
