My second mission is to visit the Camp Tarawa Memorial in Waimea, Hawaii. The three panels honor the Second and Fifth Marine Divisions, and the V Amphibious Corps. Of the 55,000 Marines, Navy Corpsmen and Seabees who trained at Camp Tarawa, a total of 5,145 were killed in action or died of their wounds. 18,029 were wounded in action in the invasions of Saipan-Tinian and Iwo Jima. The memorial was created to keep alive the history of the men of the 2nd and 5th Marine Divisions who trained at old Camp Tarawa from December 1943 until the Camp was finally closed for good in November 1945.
This is 1/5 travel bugs we've sent out in honor of each branch of the military. We've selected destinations relevant to each branch.
The United States Marine Corps traces its roots to the Continental Marines of the American Revolutionary War, formed by Captain Samuel Nicholas by a resolution of the Second Continental Congress on November 10, 1775, to raise two battalions of Marines. That date is regarded and celebrated as the date of the Marine Corps' birthday.
I reached my first destination on 01/28/2020 thanks to NPGlenn.
