Buggit is a young hobbit that was taken, along with his identical twin brother Geonit, from his parents shortly after his birth. He is on a great quest to return to his home shire in the Green Briar Forest. The Green Briar Forrest is located near a small village called Martin, in the beautiful kingdom of Tennessee.
Valagar, king of all the Southern Mountains, was in a state of anger and rage. Someone had taken his newborn son, Prince Valagar II. The King dispatched the entire royal guard to search every home within the kingdom. They looked in every barn, circled every tree in the royal forest, and overturned every rock in the kingdom, but there was no sign of the infant prince. Desperate to find his only heir, King Valagar summoned Kurell, the dark Wizard of Thieves, to his castle. Kurell had once been a member of Valagar’s court, but had been exiled to the Desert Lands of the West Kingdom after the disappearance of the king’s purse. King Valagar did not trust Kurell, but he knew that the wizard had powers that might find the prince when normal means could not. The king promised the evil Kurell his freedom from exile and all of the kingdom’s River Territory if he would use his powers to find the missing child. Kurell eagerly agreed, and hatched a dark plan to bring back a prince to King Valagar, gain possession of the beautiful River Territory, and take revenge upon the king for exiling him. Dark plans were the only kind of plans Kurell knew how to hatch, and dark plans are the fathers of even darker deeds. Thus, the Wizard of Thieves rode north towards the Green Briar Forest and the lands of the hobbits.
In the time of the warming earth, in the hobbit-land of Green Briar Forest, near Mouse Deer Pond, a rare and magical event occurred. Garmin and Cingagale became the proud parents of identical twins. Twins born to hobbits are extremely rare, and identical twins are as rare as a red-legged crystal moth. In the entire history of Green Briar Forest there has only been one other set of identical twins ever recorded in the birth book.
Unfortunately, Garmin and Cindagale’s happiness did not last long. For just seven days after the birth of the hobbit twins, Geoni and Buggit were stolen from their bed by Kurell, the dark Wizard of Thieves. After casting a powerful enchantment on one of the newborn hobbits, Kurell presented the infant Geoni to the king. The king and everyone who looked at the child saw, not a baby hobbit, but the human prince. Though King Valagar was suspicious of the wizard, he was overwhelmed with joy at the sight of his lost son. Neither he nor anyone else saw through Kurell’s trickery, and so, true to his word, the king gave the wizard the promised reward. The evil Kurell, unable to find a use for the other twin, Buggit, abandoned the hobbit in the forbidden Desert Lands of the West Kingdom. Kurell knew there would be little hope of an infant child surviving in such a featureless and desolate place, much less that he would ever find his way out of the endless, shifting desert. Secure that no one would ever no of his evil deed, the dark wizard rode to his new home in the beautiful River Territory.
What Kurell did not know about hobbits was that hobbits always know where they are and, more importantly, can find their way to their birth shire as well as any migrating bird. It is written in hobbit tales that once upon a time a horde of migrating trolls kidnapped a young hobbit named Rino and took him to their winter caves in the far, far end of the known world. After escaping from the trolls, the small hobbit walked for almost a full year before arriving right at his own front door. The only aid given to the young traveler was that of a few good-hearted humans kind enough to allow him to rest in their homes along the way. Geoni always felt strange and out of place. He did not know why, but he hated to wear the clothes he was dressed in. He knew that a prince had to wear shoes, but having them on his feet was worse than torture. Geoni did everything he could to keep from wearing shoes. Sometimes, he would wander barefoot to the edge of the castle grounds, feeling himself drawn towards the forest, and wonder why he never felt at home.
Even Kurell’s powerful enchantment could not last forever, and when Geoni reached his eighth year, it became painfully clear that he was not the human prince. The king and his court finally realized that the Wizard of Thieves had tricked them. This should have been a sad and frightening time for the young hobbit, but Geoni felt strangely relieved. By the time the king decided what would be done with him, he had already kicked off his shoes and run happily into the forest.
It was at this exact same moment that his twin brother, Buggit, wandered out of the Desert Lands. This was the first time he had stood under the tall, green ferns of a forest since he had been taken from his bed eight years before. Now that he was under the protection of the great oak trees, the towering redwoods, the ancient Ents, and all the green plants, Buggit finally got his bearings. Walking in the cool shade with moist moss under his feet gave him a sense of direction. It felt wonderful!
