Conner Otolaryngology Geocoin

~~~~The mission of this special coin is to make it as far as possible from its activation point in Galveston Texas. A second winner will be for the most miles travelled. The winners of this friendly competiton will win an award at the next Bailey Society Meeting in 2019.

~~~~These custom made geocoins were made to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the Byron Bailey Surgical Society. On one side is the Departmental patch for the Otolaryngology Department at UTMB in Galveston Texas. On the other side is a samurai warrior who represents our desire to live heroically and strive to lead a life of self-mastery and life-long learning. “Do today what others won’t so you can do tomorrow what others can’t”.

 The Byron Bailey Surgical Society was founded in 2009 by the Department of Otolaryngology at UTMB Galveston. For decades the University of Texas Medical Branch has trained medical students and residents. From 1968-2003, Dr. Bailey served as the Wiess Professor and Chair for the Department of Otolaryngology. An internationally known and highly respected head and neck surgeon, Dr. Bailey is well recognized as a great teacher, humanitarian, and man of integrity. The Byron Bailey Surgical Society was formed not only to continue his great legacy of leadership and vision but also to serve as a forum to fulfill his wish as spelled out in the dedication of the now famous textbook which bears his name. “May we always keep the needs of our patients foremost in our minds and in our hearts as we study, learn, and practice the science and art of medicine.”
The Byron Bailey Surgical Society meeting is always held on the last full weekend of June and the meeting is brought to order each year by reciting the dedication above. This is a scientific meeting which grants 5-6 hours of CME including one hour of ethics CME. It is a wonderful opportunity for former residents and community based otolaryngologists to return and enjoy the scientific inquiry, the camaraderie and to show support for our current otolaryngology residents. We hope returning each year will bring back to you something of the institution where your important early years of learning ENT were spent. The affection surrounding any residency is a product of innumerable experiences, feelings, and thoughts had by its residents and generated by the common purpose toward which we all are striving. Into this Department, with such a rich history, has gone a part of you. Sharing the years of effort spent here with our team, acquiring the skills to practice otolaryngology, making lifelong friends, you have taken away with you a part of this Department. Think of the residents who succeed you here and how you too can have a positive impact on their tenure at UTMB. Hooyah!

  Membership: There are 4 ways to become a member of the Byron Bailey Surgical Society. As of 2017 there are 83 members.
  1. To graduate from the Otolaryngology residency at UTMB
  2. To be on faculty in the Department of Otolaryngology at UTMB
  3. To be a guest speaker at the Society Meeting
  4. To be granted honorary membership by the President of the Society
  Lapel pin: Granted to all new members and expected to be worn at future meetings, the small metal pin is engraved with the center part of the Ashbel Smith Building “OLD RED”, the first medical school in Texas. On the top is written, “Byron Bailey Surgical Society”. Underneath OLD RED is our motto, “SAPERE AUDE” and on the bottom tab is written FELLOW signifying official membership in the Surgical Society.

 To commemorate the tenth anniversary meeting of the Byron Bailey Surgical Society held in June of 2018, a special patch was designed and will be given out to members in attendance.
