Current Goal

To visit the Ghirardelli Chocolate Manufactory at Ghirardelli Square in San Francisco

About This Item

CM's sweetest dream is to take a tour of the Girardelli Chocolate Manufactory. Do they give free samples? Do they have an outlet store? Do they allow moose to swim in the dark chocolate vats?

He'd love to have his picture taken in front of their building.

Thank you for helping him along!

Way overdue for another visit the the chocolate center of the universe. The moose visited a puzzle cache involving Girardelli chocolate, and the final is at Girardelli Square.

    • Duck, Duck, Moose.
    • Shopping, Moose style.
    • Enough for little while.

I accidentally dropped the poor Moose in the Bon Tempe cache while logging caches on my pda. Selecting TBs to drop is very trick in the tiny fonts the pda uses! Since you cannot un-drop a TB, I had to retrieve it to get the Moose back onto his pile of chocolate.

After pulling the very plump moose out of the geocache, we went for a little walk along the waterfront to build up an appetite.

    • The Tortoise and the Fare There's no chocolate in there!
    • Chocolate Melanger The Moose carefully inspected this old melanging machine. "No chocolate," he reported.
    • Cable Car There is a cable car turn-around right next to Ghirardelli Square. This is a form of transport even stranger than geocache highway used by travel bugs.
    • Fisherman's Wharf Fisherman's Wharf is a short walk away.
    • Time for Lunch! Walking to Fisherman's Wharf and back was enough for the Moose. He was ready to attack some Sundaes in the Ghirardelli Ice Cream Shop.
    • A very happy Chocolate Moose The Chocolate Moose had finally had enough goodies from Ghirardelli Square. He couldn't quite finish the fourth Sundae. We brought him back home to sleep it off.

The Ghirardelli chocolate factory moved to San Leandro (over in the east bay) many years ago, but the Ghirardelli chocolate shop in the square has a chocolate making exhibit. The Chocolate Moose was impressed.

    • Cocoa Bean Roasters According to the sign: "The outer shell of the bean is removed leaving behind the kernel also called 'nibs'. These nibs are then roasted thus developing their unique flavor."
    • Chocolate Mills "In three tiered mills a combination of grinding and frictional heat melt the cocoa nibs into a liquid called chocolate liquor or unsweetened chocolate as we know it today."
    • Melanger "Granite rollers then mix the chocolate liquor with selected ingredients. These may include whole milk powder, sugar, vanilla and additional cocoa butter in varying amounts, depending on the type of chocolate being made."
    • Conche "Conching is a final step in the chocolate making process. It smoothes and aerates the chocolate developing its flavor and texture. The chocolate is then tempered and deposited into various size models."

This morning, Team Ottlet was awakened by a strange bugling sound. It was the Chocolate Moose. He was ready to go! We managed a little breakfast and piled into the Ottletmobile.

    • Destination in sight at last!
    • Chocolate Shop This is one of the two Ghirardelli chocolate shops in Ghirardelli Square.
    • Enough chocolate at last!
    • I'll take ten of each!
    • Yum! The Chocolate Moose burrowed in for some serious eating.

We found the Chocolate Moose on the campus of Stanford University. It was clear he was in distress. "chocolate... chocolate..." he murmured. He was very weak. We brought him back to Ottlet HQ. He didn't want to come: "wrong way... it's been soooo long, and now I am going the wrong way..." I think is what he was mumbling. We carefully checked his mission and realized the problem: we were getting farther from Ghirardelli Square. We got him home and checked our supplies of chocolate. Yes!!! We had just the thing to perk him up. Our stash of eight Ghirardelli chocolate squares disappeared shortly after I took his picture. He seemed to perk up considerably. I showed him my GPSr. "See, little guy? It's only 37 miles to Ghirardelli Square!" His antlers suddenly stood straight up! "It's been FOUR LONG YEARS," he said. "I was stuck out in the woods for a year in a cache. Then I was stuck in someone's closet for another year. I thought I would never make it there. It's only 37 miles?" he asked. We told him, well it's a bit farther by road, but not much. He was ready to march out the door and head up there, but we told him he better wait until tomorrow. "We'll take you up there," we told him. Tears of joy came to his eyes. He was speechless. -- TO BE CONTINUED --

    • Hungry Moose Team Ottlet members Otto, Marie, and Olivia give the famished Chocolate Moose some much needed Ghirardelli chocolate squares.
    • It's only 37 miles! The GPSr shows the poor Chocolate Moose just how close he is.
