Took Kwai Chang on a Memorial Day visit to Old Town and the Presidio. Saw the following:
#54--Ft. Stockton, where the longest infantry march (Mormon Battalion) in US history ended in 1847. Find out more about the battalion at the museum down the hill from Heritage Park in Old Town.
#59--San Diego Presidio, founded as a military outpost in 1769; first San Diego mission in 1774. See photo.
#65--Whaley House, oldest brick structure in So. Calif. Said to be haunted.
#67--Serra Palm, oldest planted tree (by non-native)in CA. Grew from 1769 until cut down on 06-06-1957.
#68--El Campo Santo, burial place of many distinguished early Californians and eminant Native Americans. 1849-1897
#244--Derby Dike, diverted San Diego River into what is now Mission Bay. One of first U.S. Govt. projects in CA.
