Grabbed Kwai Chang from Pedro's Place--which may be impossible to get to once those thistles have dried out! I'm visiting my mom here, and will return to Southern California on Monday. Checking to see if there are some accessible markers on my way south.

Kwai Chang is visiting the adobe of Pedro Estrada, the owner of Asuncion Rancho from 1845 until 1861. All that remains of his home, the Estrada Adobe on Traffic Way in Atascadero, is a door frame and a "lump" of the adobe in a 10' x 10' square. As the southernmost Rancho of Mission San Miguel, the Franciscan clergy had constructed this house at Rancho Asuncion in 1812.

    • Front door of Pedro's domicile Had to bushwack to Estrada's Adobe because the spring rains have created head high thistles and weeds.
    • Greenery everywhere Near The Lakes, upscale housing near the Salinas River in Atascadero, CA.
Atascadero, a lovely, romantic sounding name that translates to; the muddy, or boggy place.

Here are a few photos of Historical Landmark 958. I couldn't get any closer because the whole building has been fenced off since the Dec. 2003 earthquake which made the building uninhabitable.

Visited 2 CA historical landmarks. With the first one it was difficult to get a legible picture of the tablet because of the chain link fence. But, I got a great pic of the store, itself. It's NO. 802 - AH LOUIS STORE. The other landmark is NO. 325 - MISSION SAN LUIS OBISPO DE TOLOSA.

    • Landmark NO: 802 - Ah Louis Store Ah Louis' Store, established in 1874, was the first Chinese store in the county. It sold general merchandise and herbs and served as a bank, counting house, and post office for the numerous Chinese coolies who dug the eight tunnels through the Mountains of Cuesta for the Southern Pacific Railroad, 1884 to 1894.

    • Landmark NO: 325 - See Kwai Chang on top, riding t Mission San Luis Obispo De Tolosa. Founded by Fray Junipero Serra, OFM, first president of the California missions, Mission San Luis Obispo was the fifth in a chain of 21 missions stretching from San Diego to Sonoma. Built by the Chumash Indians living in the area, its combination of belfry and vestibule is unique among California missions. In 1846 John C. Fremont and his California Battalion quartered here while engaged in the war with Mexico.
