Alexander Hamilton. Maybe the most famous American of the period outside of Washington and Franklin, thanks to the Chernow biography and then the smashing sucess of the musical starring him.
Born out of wedlock, he rose well above his station through talent and inteligence, served as George Washington's right-hand-man during most of the War for Independence, showed great personal bravery during the Battle of Yorktown, shot massive guns at Princeton University, played a HUGE role in getting the Constitutional Convention called, and then the Constitution approved through the Federalist Papers and his direct role in the debates in New York's Constitutional Convention. He then went on to fix the country's terrible financial footing while serving as the first Secretary of the Treasury. He sucessfully argued in front of the Supreme Court, helped establish the US Mint, helped establish first Bank of the United States, and was defacto leader of the US Army during the Whiskey Rebellion.
He has more scandelous parts of his life too, and in the end, died by the shores of the Hudson River in New Jersey, having been shot by former Vice President Aaron Burr.
