 Patchy wants to see as many of Earth's famous observatories as he can. He also wants to see the some of those owned by individuals or other astronomy clubs.

About This Item

Patchy after receiving his travel bug implant

Patchy is our first travel bug. Looking at him tells the story of his humble beginnings as the logo for our local astronomy club. He has been sitting in a drawer in my desk for the last 3 years as I was not sure what I wanted to do with him. When we started geocaching, his purpose finally became clear to me. He needs to see the world, go far places and see lots of other telescopes. Some of his personal goals include seeing the stars of the southern hemisphere and maybe one day Earth from the Moon or Mars. Who knows, maybe even make it back home some day so he can tell us of his journeys. If you move him and have a digital camera, try to post a pic or two of Patchy at the sites you take him to. Patchy enters a cache near Kitt Peak Observatory. (Click "visit log," then click the photo to see a sharper image.)

In our travels on the way to this cache and other locales, Patchy also passed a home with a private observatory in the back yard in the town of Sahuarita, AZ, although we did not stop for a photo.

Interestingly, I found Patchy in a cache very near the site of the new observatory our little town is developing. The building is up, and we await the arrival of the telescope. I will take my camera out there to get a photo for posting. Not a famous observatory, but at least an observatory.

If it weren't so far in the future, I could take Patchy to the observatory at Flagstaff. However, I am not going through there until October. Will replace Patchy's worn Ziploc and get him into another cache sooner than that.
