Current Goal

This coin has a very specific mission: It wants to visit and be photographed at the original Tun Tavern site in Philadelphia, PA (Corner of Water Street and Tun Alley) at what is today known as Penn's Landing. Additionally, it would like to be photographed with as many Marines (former and present), bases, equipment, paraphernalia as possible.

About This Item

Tun Tavern - Birthplace of the Corps

The LangHerd is a Marine family. The "adults" in the herd were both active duty Marines for quite some time.

We never had the opportunity to visit Tun Tavern, so we'll let our coin do it for us.

For those "non Marine" types... a bit of history.

On November 10, 1775, Robert Mullan, the proprietor of the Tavern and son of Peggy Mullan, was commissioned by an act of Congress to raise the first two battalions of Marines, under the leadership of Samuel Nicholas, the first appointed Commandant of the Continental Marines. Nicholas's grandfather was also a member of the Tun Tavern Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons and it is this relationship between Mullan, Nicholas and the Tavern which has resulted in Tun Tavern being acknowledged as the birthplace of the United States Marine Corps. There are an estimated three million active and retired U.S. Marines worldwide who have been exposed in their military training to the historical significance of Tun Tavern.

Each year on November 10th, around the world Marines toast the Marine's birthplace on the most significant date in the history of the Corps.

FTF this very cool coin this morning! George's Dad was (is, you never stop being a Marine) in WWII and will enjoy seeing this coin. Can't get it to Philadelphia but we will place it in another cache shortly.
