Smokey Bear has been the symbol of forest fire (wildfire) prevention since the summer of 1944. His DOB was August 9, 1944. The year before Smokey was created by the Ad Council, the fire prevention message was promoted by Bambi whose movie debut was in 1943. There actually was a bear cub rescued from a forest fire in New Mexico. He was flown to Washington DC and lived in the National Zoo until his death. The remains were taken back to New Mexico. His grave is in a park in Capitan, New Mexico. Smokey Bear still has his own zip code in Washington, DC (20252).
During 2024 expect to see a flag or other display celebrating Smokey's 80th birthday. The name, image and likeness and distinctive voice are owned by the United States Forest Service, the Association of State Foresters and the US Ad Council.
I named this Bear cachkin "Smokey's Great Grand Bear. Let's hope that the mesage "Only You" continues long into the future.
